“I haven’t thought about Timmy in years. What was he, like two years older than O’Hanlon?” I say to Jeff Taich. I move my cart out of the way for other shoppers looking for crackers.

“I guess he’s still in Chicago,” Jeff Taich says. “The O’Hanlons will never leave that city. Too much there for them. Me, I moved to St. Louis in ’97 for law school. Haven’t been back to Chi-town since, except for the ten-year memorial. I felt like I owed it to O’Hanlon’s family.”

I cringe—the few times I ever got an e-mail about a memorial for O’Hanlon, I deleted the correspondence unread. Something unyielding in the pit of my stomach made me do it. I don’t have the balls to revisit the past, even though it would maybe be the right thing to do. I don’t have the balls for a lot of things anymore. I guess that’s one of the gifts that age offers up—an understanding of the world as a ruthless place devoid of mercy, and yet I still manage to get up for work the next day. Besides, the last person O’Hanlon’s family would want to see is me. I’m no tax attorney, but even I know better than that.
